The John C. Dempsey Education Campus, including Dempsey Middle School, the outdoor athletic and recreation areas, wetlands and the District's Technology Center, is located on 31 acres of land.
Dempsey Middle School opened its doors on August 28, 2000 and serves the Delaware community not only as an educational institution, but also as an after school activity center for a variety of exciting programs. The 690-member student body is structured into six smaller learning communities known at Dempsey as Teams (Team 7-1, 7-2, 7-3, 8-1, 8-2, 8-3.) This widely used schools within a school middle school organizational model effectively provides for the social, emotional and academic needs that are unique to 7th and 8th graders.
All 7th and 8th graders take coursework in the four major core academic areas: English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies, with the option to take advanced or regular math in 7 th grade; pre-algebra or algebra in grade 8. If qualified, students may also elect to take advanced science (ASK --Advanced Science for Kids) in both 7 th and 8 th grade in lieu of regular science.
All other course offerings at Dempsey are identified as the Related Arts. Students may elect to take band, orchestra or chorus. Students who do not wish to participate in performing arts take general music, technology education, foreign language survey (7th), and family consumer science (8th). All students take health, physical education and art. Some students elect to take French or Spanish in 8 th grade instead of an achievement/enrichment support period. A 30 minute lunch period is built into the day.
