Child Check

Each child will develop at his or her own pace, following predictable stages. Some new skills will develop earlier than expected, while others appear later. Each new step is a building block leading to the growth of physical capabilities and the ability to think, speak and interact with others. Please use this resource from The Ohio Department of Education regarding developmental norms for children birth-age 5.

Ohio families also have the opportunity to utilize FREE online developmental assessment tools for children Birth to Age 5. The FREE ASQ tools are available on the Help Me Grow website at www.helpmegrow.org/ASQ. Following the assessment tool, parents will receive a call from a Help Me Grow Developmental Screening Specialist to discuss results, receive referrals (Early Intervention, Home Visiting, Preschool Special Education) and connect with community resources available through the Community Resource Directory. This tool can help parents and caregivers understand how a child is developing and whether there are any concerns.

Delaware City School District provides free developmental screenings (Child Checks) to any child ages 3-5 for whom the family has a significant developmental concern in the areas of communication, cognitive, social-emotional, behavioral, language, motor, or adaptive skills.  The screening can consist of the following:

  • Child and Family History Questionnaire
  • Developmental History
  • Screening by Intervention Specialist
  • Screenings by the Speech-Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, and/or Physical Therapist as needed
  • Results of a screening do not guarantee admittance/eligibility to attend Delaware City Schools Special Needs Preschool.

Appointments for Child Checks are in the morning one time per month, September through May on the following days: September 13, October 11, November 8, December 13, January 10, February 14, March 21, April 11, May 16.
